Overall, CPU performance for the A isn't exactly stunning. But it is close enough to that of the more expensive and power-hungry AK to make the latter chip a lesser value unless you're planning on overclocking and don't care much about power or heat output.
And on that front, the Kaveri A10 is certainly more impressive. Graphics Performance We started out our graphics testing with the version of Futuremark's 3DMark, specifically its high-end Fire Strike benchmark subtest, which is designed to measure a system's overall graphics capabilities. AMD Dual Graphics One of the potential benefits of opting for an AMD APU is that you can combine the integrated graphics on the chip with a dedicated graphics card, whether you buy that card when you build the system, or months or years down the line. We paired an MSI version of the Radeon R7 card with the A and were, for the most part, pleasantly surprised.
When last we visited Dual Graphics, we had a heck of a time just getting it working. And once we did, performance was noticeably choppy, presumably caused by driver immaturity in light of the complicated process of getting two different banks of graphics cores to work in sync with each other. That, combined with the intermittent performance issues Dual Graphics still introduces, means if you can afford it, you should probably just save up for a more powerful dedicated graphics card. We see Dual Graphics as a stopgap only for those on very constrained budgets. Unless you're adamant about overclocking and don't care about power consumption and heat, it's a better buy than the more power-hungry and pricier AK.
If you don't care much about gaming, Intel's chips in this price range are still a better buy. And we think the A still represents the sweet spot between performance and value in AMD's current Kaveri chip stack especially now that it should actually be available to buy. But if you're looking to build a budget PC for gaming and general computing purposes and you weren't quite impressed enough with the benchmark scores of the A chip, the A certainly delivers more performance. It makes sense that users would want to leverage the performance potential of a fully functioning AMD Catalyst AMD A10 APU Graphics while upgrading their overall graphics performance with a higher end standalone GPU.
To get this to work is very simple.
Assuming that the user has been using the APU as their primary graphics controller, they should update to the latest Catalyst drivers. If the user is going to use an AMD card, then it would behoove them to totally uninstall the Catalyst driver and re-install only after the new card is installed. Save the setting and shut down the machine. Insert the new video card and attach the monitor cable s to it.
Windows 7 and Windows 8 allow users to install multiple graphics drivers from different vendors.
